Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

Mission Highlights

The National Air and Space Museum observed several significant aviation and space anniversaries in 2009, among them the 100th anniversary of military aviation; the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing; and the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of a telescope, which was commemorated as The International Year of Astronomy. These occasions served as the basis for special events and programs throughout the year. Historic artifacts, such as the Wright Military Flyer and the Apollo 11 Command Module, Columbia, as well as a new observatory, enhanced visitors' understanding of these important milestones.
