Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

Research

Since its founding, the Smithsonian has been committed to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. Most of the Museum's millions of visitors are only aware of the latter part of this mission. Behind the scenes, a respected group of curators, fellows, and scientists conduct research that increases our understanding of aviation and space exploration's role in history; science and technology's central place in modern life; and the latest findings about our solar system.

Research activities include leading scientific field expeditions; serving on planetary exploration teams; contributing to professional organizations and societies; conducting historical research; and writing scholarly and popular books, papers, and articles.
