An experimental approach to visitor services initiated by the National Air and Space Museum when it opened the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center last December has proven so successful, it is expanding to the flagship building on the National Mall. The museum is recruiting volunteers to participate in the new program.

Visitor Services volunteers are trained to greet and engage people, answer questions, and provide information on exhibitions, programs and amenities. Nicknamed the Blue Crew because of their bright blue vests, these volunteers help orient visitors to the museum's massive buildings and one-of-a-kind artifacts.

Blue Crew members not only work at the door but also throughout the museum buildings--pointing out interactive and age-specific activities; directing visitors to simulators and IMAX® movies; and sharing their enthusiasm for the history of flight and flight-related science and technology.

Many Visitor Services volunteers have been or are currently involved in aviation and space in some way, with interesting stories and experiences to share.

Recognized as the world's most visited museum, the museum welcomes several million people each year. Although the new program is operational at both locations, more volunteers are needed.

Besides gaining a unique behind-the-scenes perspective of the museum, volunteers receive discounts at the museum shops, food services, the museum's theaters, and a chance to satisfy their curiosity about the history of aviation and space through training opportunities.
