Robonaut 2, NASA’s humanoid robot, is making its debut on the International Space Station, and its twin is doing a tour of Earth to promote robot human collaboration in human spaceflight. R2’s twin will be at the National Air and Space Museum and make four presentations throughout the day. It will perform tasks that illustrate human-like motion, safe operations in proximity to humans, strength, dexterity and International Space Station activities.

Robonaut 2 was delivered to the International Space Station by the space shuttle Discovery on
STS-133, its final mission. President Barack Obama mentioned the delivery of Robonaut 2 in his conversation with the STS-133 and Expedition 26 crews.

The Moving Beyond Earth gallery is the museum’s most recent space exhibition, it has three main themes: Moving into Space, Living and Working in Space and Envisioning Our Future in Space.

Interested media must RSVP to larai@si.edu.

Robonaut 2 is the next generation dexterous robot, developed through a Space Act Agreement by NASA and General Motors. It is faster, more dexterous and more technologically advanced than its predecessors and able to use its hands to do work beyond the scope of previously introduced humanoid robots.
