Edgar Mix, an American who had spent most of his life in France, won this commemorative plaque for his victorious flight in the 1909 Gordon Bennett Balloon Race. Mix flew his balloon nearly 1,120 kilometers (700 miles), from Switzerland to Poland, in 35 hours.
