This is a standard issue M1912/1917 United States Army Air Service uniform coat. This coat was worn by 2nd Lt. Howard H. Gleason during World War I. Lt. Gleason went overseas on May 20, 1918 and served with the 8th and 258th Aero Squadrons.

Physical Description:
United States Army Air Service (USAAS) Type M1912/1917 officer's uniform coat; single breasted drab wool with five brass buttons down front; two upper patch pockets and two lower patch pockets with brass buttoned flap; stiff or "choker" collar; single gold officer's lace on each cuff; epaulets; brass "U.S." insignia on collar; red wool "discharge" chevron left arm; 2nd Division indian head insignia with Air Service roundel on left shoulder.
