This Alan Shepard commemorative medal was designed by the Italian sculptor, Constantino Affer. As part of the Project Mercury program, Alan Shepard was the first American to fly in space on May 25, 1961. His suborbital flight in the Freedom 7 capsule lasted just over 15 minutes.
