This National Commemorative Society medal commemorates the first Skylab crew (astronauts Pete Conrad, Joseph Kerwin, and Paul Weitz), who launched on May 25, 1973 and occupied America's first space station until June 22, 1973. While onboard, the crew deployed a sunshade to insulate Skylab, which had been damaged during its launch earlier in May. They also freed a solar wing that had been jammed with debris. The National Historical Foundation, the parent group for the National Commemorative Society, U.S.A. gave this medal to the National Collection in 1974.
