This nosecone was used to test materials that could survive the tremendous heat generated during reentry into the Earth's atmosphere. An unknown manufacturer made it of an ablative material that has not been identified. Because it is charred, the nosecone was used in an actual flight test or ground test on an unknown date and location. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center transferred it to the Museum in 1978.
