This Thomas D. White National Defense Award statue was received by Dr. Charles Stark Draper in 1970. Established in 1962 by the U.S. Air Force Academy, the award is given annually to an American citizen who is adjudged to have contributed most significantly to the national defense and security of the United States. Dr. Draper received the award on account of his work beginning in World War II on guidance, navigation, and control systems for aircraft, missiles, rockets, manned spacecraft, and naval ships. Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this one, to the National Collection in 1974.
