Gauge Cap, Spacesuit, Sokol KV-2, Thagard

  • Summary

Astronaut:   Norman E. Thagard

Manufacturer:   Zvezda

Country of Origin: Russian Federation

Dimensions:
Overall: 1.91 x 5.72cm (3/4in. x 2 1/4in.)

Materials:
Neoprene Rubber

This small, neoprene cap covers one of the dials on Norman Thagard's Sokol KV-2 spacesuit in order to protect the dial while the spacesuit is in storage. All astronauts who travel on board Soviet and Russian spacecraft must wear a Sokol spacesuit during launch and entry. During their stay on board space stations, the astronauts and cosmonauts store their spacesuits and wear normal work clothes. Although they are in storage, the suits must be accessible and undamaged in case of an emergency. This cap covers one of the dials to assure that it is not damaged during the suit's time in storage.

NASA transferred this cap to the museum in 1996 along with the suit.

Transferred from NASA.
