Metal pin with tie tack back
This pin depicts the F-4 Phantom II, a fighter manufactured by McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. Created as a promotional item, this pin was one of a dozen or so owned by Robert L. "Bob" Foster, a McDonnell Aircraft chief engineer, who also worked on Project Mercury (1959-1965) and Project Gemini (1965-1967). He served as base manager, Deputy Director, and Director of Vandenberg Air Force Base during the late 1960s and later, as head of the Manned Orbiting Laboratory project. This piece of McDonnell memorabilia marks his participation in other significant projects done alongside his work on human spaceflight. Foster's daughter, Sally Foster-Chang donated the pin to the National Collection in 2005.
Gift of Sally Foster-Chang in memory of her parents: Bob and Toni Foster
