Overall: 1 1/4 in. tall x 1 in. wide (3.18 x 2.54cm)

Materials:
Laminated stamp with metal safety pin back on cushion pad

This pin, created from a $2.40 United States stamp, depicts two Apollo Program astronauts planting the American flag in the lunar surface. Because this image cannot be identified as any particular Apollo mission landing, the choices made in the creation of this stamp -- and the pin created from it -- celebrate the Apollo Program as a whole. Although the Apollo lunar missions also emphasized the universal achievement of landing humans on the Moon, this pin reflects the celebration of the Apollo lunar landing program as an uniquely American achievement. Timothy Connelly donated this pin, collected by his father who was an avid pin and button collector, to the Smithsonian in 2005.
