This is a collector's card from "Lost in Space," a science fiction TV show presented on the CBS television network from 1965 to 1968. It was a space-age adaptation of the 1812 novel "Swiss Family Robinson" (Der Schweizerische Robinson) by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss. In the television series, Wyss's basic story, originally written to teach self-reliance, family values, and other virtues to his sons, was reset in a space setting. The story of the modern Robinson family stranded in deep space also translated the conventions of 1960s family situation dramas into a space-themed setting.
Although "Lost in Space" was cancelled after three episodes, it developed a fan base that collected associated merchandise, joined fan clubs, and supported a 1998 feature length film of the same title. This collector's card set featuring the 1960s television series was produced when the later feature film was released.
This card was donated to the Smithsonian Institution in 2005 by Gregory K. H. Bryant.
