What is the Udvar-Hazy Center Open House Social?
Celebrate the Udvar-Hazy Center's tenth anniversary with its first-ever open house. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at historic artifacts, documents, and works of art that are not on public display and see what it takes to collect, preserve, and restore them. Udvar-Hazy Center Open House Social participants have the opportunity to take an advance look at this event before it opens for public hours.
What is a Social?
A Social is an informal meeting of people who are active on social media. National Air and Space Museum Socials provide the Museum’s social media followers with the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes, see our collections, interact with our experts, and sometimes meet special guests. Participants can expect a few hours long, half or full-day experience and some free time to explore the Museum, talk with other Museum social media users, and meet staff behind the Museum’s social media outreach.
How do I register?
Registration opens at 12 pm EST on Thursday, January 2nd and the deadline to apply is 12 pm EST on Thursday, January 9th. A maximum of 10 social media participants will be selected to attend the Social. Registration is for one person only and is non-transferable. You must be 18 years or older to register. Participants will be notified via email no later than Monday, January 13th. Social participants are selected from those who sign up on the web. Additional registrants are placed on a waiting list.
Do I need to have a social media account to register for a National Air and Space Museum Social?
Yes, National Air and Space Museum Socials are designed for active social media users who follow the Museum. The goal of our Socials is to allow people who regularly interact with the Museum and each other via social media to meet in person and share the experience of visiting the Museum’s collections, experts, and programs.
The Fine Print (Terms & Conditions):
Registrants must follow the National Air and Space Museum on one or more social platforms (@airandspace on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Pinterest, Foursquare, etc.) and actively share content via social media. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to be eligible for selection to attend the Social. Registration is for one person only and is not transferable.
If you are selected for the Social but cannot attend, please let the Museum know and your space will be given to another registrant on the wait list.
Social participants are responsible for their own expenses for travel, accommodations, food and incidentals. Please let the Museum know if you have any special needs or accessibility requirements prior to arriving for the event.
Some events and participants scheduled to appear at the Social are subject to change without notice. The Smithsonian is not responsible for loss or damage incurred as a result of attending. The Smithsonian, moreover, is not responsible for loss or damage incurred in the event it cancels the event with limited or no notice. Please plan accordingly.
On the day of the Social, registrants must show a government issued ID (driver’s license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. All Social participants will be asked to sign a release form allowing the Smithsonian to use images or video taken of you and social media posts created by you during the event. You will also be briefed on guidelines designed to respect the privacy of our Museum visitors.
What are @airandspace Social registration requirements?
By registering for a National Air and Space Museum Social, you are indicating your intention to travel to the site of the event and attend in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, accommodation, food and other amenities. National Air and Space Museum locations are part of the Smithsonian Institution. You will need to provide government-issued identification (driver’s license or passport) that matches the name provided on your registration.
Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?
Yes, non-U.S. citizens may register to attend National Air and Space Museum Socials.
When and how will I know if I am selected?
After registration closes, an e-mail with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those selected as well as those on a waitlist. If you are on the waitlist, you may receive an invitation only if someone on the original selection list cancels and a space opens up.
What if I cannot travel to the Social?
If you cannot attend in person, please do not register for the Social. However, you can still plan to join the conversation by following the Museum and Social participants on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram. Use the official event hashtag to follow and join the conversation.
How can I get in touch with other Social participants?
We will create a Twitter list that includes those selected to attend the event who actively use Twitter. Attendees are welcome and encouraged to create other means of interacting with each other online prior to and after the event. By registering for the event you understand that you will be included in the list of participants and that you will be able to find other participants there, or by following the hashtag provided for the event.
Can I bring friends or family members to the Social with me?
No. Social activities are for registrants only. Any public programs associated with or timed around a Social event are open to the public, so family are welcome to attend those programs while you engage in the Social.
What Else Should I Know?
You will be asked to sign a photo release form allowing the Smithsonian to use your social media posts and any images or video taken of you during the event. You will also be briefed on guidelines designed to respect the privacy of our visitors.
