Navigating a submarine that stays submerged for long periods requires advanced equipment, and new technology had to be developed to solve the problems of underwater navigation, Join Center for Earth and Planetary Science geographer Andrew Johnston as he provides details of the navigation equipment from the submarine USS Alabama on display in the Time and Navigation exhibition, and explains how it was possible for the crew to keep track of their position underneath the waves.
