The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, in collaboration with the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education, is hosting the 2013 Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) National Conference on July 2 and 3, 2013.  The SSEP National Conference is a science conference that brings together 5th – 14th grade student scientists from across the United States and Canada.  The SSEP is a national Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education initiative that provides students the ability to propose experiments to fly in low Earth orbit onboard the International Space Station (ISS), and to celebrate that accomplishment with their peers and a national audience.  Students who participated in flight opportunities on space shuttle missions STS-134 and STS-135, and four subsequent missions to the ISS, will present their experimental designs and results in the Museum’s Moving Beyond Earth exhibition.  Student Spaceflight Experiments Program participants, their families, teachers, and the general public are invited. In November, 2012, Museum staff conducted a live video downlink between students, Museum visitors, and astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS). All participating students were involved in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP), an on-orbit educational research opportunity that allows students to design and send experiments to the space station.
