The 2011 Exploring Space Lectures

MESSENGER Spacecraft At Mercury On the Forefront: What's New in the Solar System

Exciting things are happening in the Solar System! Recent missions with advanced sensors are opening a new window on the study of our region of space. The Solar Dynamics Observatory is collecting unprecedented views of the Sun's activity, while at Mars the HiRISE camera expands our understanding of the planet’s complex surface. MESSENGER is the first spacecraft ever to orbit Mercury, and Dawn is about to reveal an unfamiliar world never seen close-up before. Explore these intriguing developments in Solar System science with four lectures presented during NASA's Year of the Solar System.

Introductory Materials:
March 24th - The Solar Dynamics Observatory: The Sun Up Close and Personal.
April 7th - Mars: A Dynamic World.
May 12th - Exploring Mercury by Spacecraft: The MESSENGER Mission.
