QUICK FACTS
WHAT:
"Explore
the Universe" is a permanent exhibition that showcases
some of the most significant observational tools astronomers have
devised over the past four centuries and the role each has played
in our continuing quest to understand the universe.

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum,

Washington D.C.
WHEN: Opens
to the public on Friday, Sept. 21, 2001
SPONSORS:
"Explore
the Universe" is made possible through the generous contributions
of the National Science Foundation and TRW, with additional funding
from Corning Incorporated Foundation/Corning Incorporated, the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Smithsonian
Institution Special Exhibitions Fund. Additional support is provided
by Analytical Graphics, Inc. and the Eastman Kodak Company.
ARTIFACTS:
Seventy-three, including key elements from three of the most important
telescopes ever made: the 20-foot telescope tube and mirror used
by William Herschel; an observation cage from the Mount Wilson
Observatory, used by Edwin Hubble; and the still flight-ready
backup mirror of the Hubble Space Telescope.
EXHIBITION
ORGANIZATION: The exhibition is organized chronologically
into five sections:
· Exploring the Universe with the Naked Eye
· Exploring the Universe with Telescopes
· Exploring the Universe with Photography
· Exploring the Universe with Spectroscopy
· Exploring the Universe in the Digital Age
