Explore Further: Warped Space

In a 1912 letter to George Ellery Hale, Einstein sketched out his idea that the warping of space by matter can cause starlight to bend as it passes a massive object, such as the Sun. Astronomers verified his theory during a total solar eclipse in 1919 by measuring the positions of stars that appeared very close to the Sun. The stars' positions varied from normal by the amount Einstein had predicted.
