Penrod observes at the summit of Haleakala Mountain on the island of Maui, 10,000 feet above sea level. The mountain's name means "house of the Sun" in Hawaiian, and it is one of Penrod's favorite locations for viewing and imaging the Sun. His telescopes are a Starmaster 18-inch Dobsonian and a Takahashi FS-102 refractor, both shown above. A Coronado hydrogen-alpha solar filter is mounted on the telescope for safe solar viewing.

Penrod records video with a Lumenera Infinity camera. This produces a series of still images. The sharpest frames are selected and combined using Registax 4 software to construct a single high-quality image.
