Challenger STS–7
George McCoy
Acrylic on masonite panel
1985
Sally Ride became the first American woman in space aboard Challenger nearly 20 years after the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, reached orbit aboard a Soviet Vostok spacecraft. George McCoy commemorated Ride’s flight with this pointillist rendition of the shuttle for the Museum’s “Looking at Earth” art competition in 1985.
