Barchan Dunes on Mars

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's high-resolution imager HiRISE captured this false-color image of barchan sand dunes. They form when the wind blows predominantly in one direction. The “horns” of these crescent-shaped dunes point in the direction the wind is blowing. Barchan dunes are common on Mars and Earth.
