Ramsey Fellowship in Naval Aviation History

Admiral Dewitt C. Ramsey

Effective in 2010, the National Air and Space Museum will no longer offer the Ramsey Fellowship in Naval Aviation History. The museum plans to reprogram the Ramsey Fund with the intention of providing sufficient funding for a future curatorship in the history of naval aviation.

Anyone with a research proposal that deals with Navy and Marine Corps aviation, the history of rocketry, missile and space activities in U.S. naval service, biographical studies of naval aviators, and multinational comparative studies that include the United States should consider applying for other fellowship grants offered by the National Air and Space Museum. These would include the Guggenheim Fellowships (pre-and post-doctoral), the A. Verville Fellowship, and the Charles A. Lindbergh Chair in Aerospace History.

Descriptions of these grants and the application process are available elsewhere on this website.

Admiral Dewitt Clinton Ramsey

Adm. Dewitt Clinton Ramsey (1888-1961) was Naval Aviator No. 45. During his distinguished career, he commanded the USS Saratoga in World War II and later became Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics and Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet. After his retirement in 1949 he was President of the Aircraft Industries Association. In her husband's memory, Mrs. Juanita Ramsey bequeathed to the National Air and Space Museum funds in 1966 that were used to endow the Ramsey Fellowship, and to build the Ramsey Room for rare books in the NASM library and the Ramsey building at the Garber Facility.
