In 1922 Bessie Coleman became the first licensed black pilot in the United States.

The historic flight of the Wright brothers in 1903 sparked a universal enthusiasm for flying. But as in most areas of life, formidable obstacles and discrimination faced black Americans who had dreams of flying. Among the obstacles that blacks had to overcome was the widely held notion in the aviation community that blacks lacked even the ability to fly.
