1971 Michael Collins, former Apollo 11 astronaut, is named director of the National Air and Space Museum.
1972

Congress appropriates $40 million in construction funds for the new building, which is designed by Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum. The groundbreaking ceremony for the National Air and Space Museum takes place on November 20.

1975 As a Bicentennial gift to the people of the United States, the Federal Republic of Germany provides the Museum with a Carl Zeiss VI planetarium instrument and an automatic control system, making the Albert Einstein Spacearium
the only fully automated planetarium
of its type in the world.
