Voyager view of Saturn
A Viking Lander spacecraft, identical to the two that landed on the surface of Mars in 1976, is displayed in the Milestones of Flight gallery.
British sculptor Rowland Emett's The S.S. (Space Ship) Pussiewillow II, commissioned by the Museum, becomes part of the permanent collection.
Early Flight, a new gallery that re-creates a 1913 aeronautical exhibition, opens to the public.
The Silver Hill Museum is renamed the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility, recognizing the contributions of Paul Garber, NASM's historian emeritus and Ramsey Fellow, who joined the Smithsonian in 1920 and was responsible for acquiring a large portion of the Museum's aeronautical collection.
The Museum provides live, real-time coverage of the Voyager fly-by of Saturn, a planetarium show on Saturn, and a theater presentation of Voyager's encounter with Jupiter.
The largest piece of the fabric that covered the original 1903 Wright Flyer is donated to the Museum by Ivonette Miller of Dayton, Ohio, a niece of the Wright brothers.
