The Museum hosts a two-day symposium, "Space Science Comes of Age," with James A. Van Allen, discoverer of the Van Allen Radiation Belts; Eugene Shoemaker, California Institute of Technology; Robert Jastrow, Goddard Institute of Space Studies; and Lyman Spitzer Jr., Princeton University (March 23).
 
The Museum's Theater is renamed the Samuel Pierpont Langley Theater, in honor of the third Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (May 1).
 
Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the Museum opens a major exhibition, Jet Aviation, and remains open to the public until midnight (July 1).
