The Museum establishes a new program of international
fellowships
for scholars and researchers from other nations
specializing in the fields of aeronautics and space
exploration (January 3).
The Martin Marietta Chair of Space History is established
to attract distinguished scholars in the field of
space history (February 6, 1985).
Museum specialists begin the restoration
of the Wright 1903 Flyer. It takes place
on the floor of the Museum behind Plexiglas walls,
providing visitors with an eye-level perspective
of the historic aircraft (February 8).
"The Dream is Alive," the Museum's fourth
large-format film , premieres (June 21).
Commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz
test project, Apollo astronauts Thomas
P. Stafford, Donald K. "Deke" Slayton
and Vance Brand are reunited with Soyuz cosmonauts
Aleksey Leonov and Valeriy Kubasov as they unveil
a plaque honoring their joint mission (July 17).
