The Smithsonian Institution awards its Samuel P. Langley Medal to Lt. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., whose lifetime of achievements includes leading the first squadrons of African American pilots-the Tuskegee Airmen-into battle during World War I (February 20).
"Star Trek," an exhibition examining the unique history and influence of a popular culture icon, opens at the Museum (February 28). In the ensuing 11 months, this temporary exhibition will draw more than 880,000 visitors.
Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid, the Museum provides a free public symposium featuring Maj. Gen. David M. Jones, Col. Joseph Manske, Lt. Col. Richard E. Cole, Doolittle's copilot, and Lt. Col. Robert L. Hite (April 9).

Russian President Boris Yeltsin presents models of the Russian space shuttles Buran and Energia
to the Museum (June 16).
