The Museum's Enola
Gay exhibition closes to the public to prepare
for a major building renovation project. During
the nearly three years that the B-29 Superfortress
was on display, nearly 4 million individuals visited
the exhibit (May 17 ). |
The first phase of a multi-million dollar renovation
begins, and includes the replacement of all skylights
and windows, and the upgrading of lighting and the
public address system. Museum Director Donald Engen
says, "We could have just closed the museum
down, but we feel a special responsibility to keep
our doors open. There will be inconveniences, but
when this project is finished I'm confident that
everyone-staff as well as visitor-will agree that
it was worth it" (May 17) |
"Business
Wings," an exhibition exploring the
role of aircraft in the business community, opens
(June 12). |
Vice President Al Gore attends the opening of "Earth
Today: A Digital View of Our Dynamic Planet"
in the Museum's Rocketry and Spaceflight gallery
(July 2). "Earth Today" allows the Museum
visitor to view information about our planet's atmosphere,
geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere as data from
satellites and global monitoring systems is projected
in near-time on a video screen. |
