National Air and Space Museum Trophy
Gen. John R. Dailey (USMC, Ret.), associate administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is named director of the Museum (January 1).
The Museum celebrates Space Day with interactive, hands-on exhibits, spacesuits and demonstrations illustrating this year's theme, "Living and Working in Space." Former astronauts Sally Ride and John Glenn join Museum Director Jack Dailey in launching "Cyber Space Day," a lively Webcast from the Museum featuring Dr. Kathryn Clark, NASA's chief scientist of the International Space Station, Dr. Bernard Harris, the first African American astronaut to walk in space, and Phil West, the "gadget man" at NASA, who is responsible for tools and vehicles in space (May 4).
The Smithsonian Institution breaks ground on a $238 million expansion of the National Air and Space Museum. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, to be located at the Washington Dulles International Airport, will showcase approximately 200 aircraft and 100 major space artifacts, and house hundreds more (October 25).
The National Air and Space Museum's Trophy is awarded to the team responsible for the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and to Scott Crossfield, famed aviator and
engineer (November 9).
