The PNC Foundation awarded the National Air and Space Museum a two-year grant to improve science education for pre-kindergarten students in District of Columbia Public Schools. The Grow Up Great with Science grant was announced at an educational activity day and press event with District of Columbia public school children, who also viewed the Washington, D.C., premiere of Sesame Street's "One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure," a multi-cultural planetarium show.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the first Apollo Moon Landing, the National Air and Space Museum opened "Painting Apollo: First Artist on Another World," an exhibition of paintings by artist and Apollo 12 astronaut, Alan Bean. The museum also welcomed the Apollo 11 crew and Mission Control creator and former Johnson Space Center director Chris Kraft as the speakers for the Museum's 2009 John H. Glenn lecture in space history.

To mark the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first recorded astronomical observations with a telescope and in conjunction with the International Year of Astronomy, the Museum opened a Public Observatory on the National Mall.
