Moving Beyond Earth
COSTAR
1909 Wright Military Flyer
The Museum opened the first stage of "Moving Beyond Earth," an exhibition about human spaceflight and welcomed the arrival of two instruments brought back from the Hubble Space Telescope: the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 that was on temporary display in Space Hall and the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement that will be featured in the "Moving Beyond Earth" gallery.
The National Air and Space Museum's two locations were featured in two Hollywood movies: "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" at the National Mall building and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
Three new exhibit stations opened at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center: Operation Migration, Inter-War Aircraft and World War I German Aircraft.
1909 was a pivotal year in aviation: the U.S. Army purchased the first aircraft destined for military purposes, the Wright Military Flyer. To mark the centennial of military aviation the National Air and Space Museum held a series of events including a symposium and a family day at the Udvar-Hazy Center.
