Admiral Donald D. Engen (1924-1999)
Donald D. Engen, the late Director of the National Air and Space
Museum, was a tireless advocate of the need for the Udvar-Hazy
Center. In 1984, he was instrumental in setting aside the land at
Dulles International Airport while he was Administrator of the Federal
Aviation Administration. Don continued his interest when he
became National Air and Space Museum Director and contributed many ideas to the design of
the new facility. He travelled the country to meet with aviation
enthusiasts, telling them about the need for the Center and soliciting
their support. He is sorely missed. The new facility will
become his legacy.
The Udvar-Hazy Center will have an observation tower from which
visitors can watch arriving and departing Dulles air traffic. The
tower has been named after Admiral Engen to honor his role in securing
the Center's future.
We
invite you to honor Admiral Engen with a contribution to his memorial
fund. This fund will be used to help build the Udvar-Hazy Center. To make a donation in
