Historical note

An historic event in aviation occurred on June 26, 1929 when two major aircraft companies: the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company merged with the Wright Aeronautical Corporation to form the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. After this merger, the former Wright organization took over all of the engine and propeller manufacture while Curtiss concentrated on airplanes. This merger was completed by organizing two major divisions under their original names, but under the direction of a corporate headquarters located in New York City. However, there was a recognized separation of spirit as well as specialized facilities that was never completely resolved in succeeding years. The election of former Wright personnel to key corporate positions soon led to Wright becoming the dominant division. At the height of the Lindbergh Boom during the 1920s and 1930s, the Curtiss-Wright Corporation was made up of the following identified organizations: The Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Company; The Curtiss-Caproni Corporation; The Curtiss-Robertson Airplane Manufacturing Company; The Keystone Aircraft Corporation; The Moth Aircraft Corporation; The Travel Air Manufacturing Company; The Wright Aeronautical Corporation; Curtiss-Wright Flying Service; The Curtiss-Wright Sales Corporation; The Curtiss-Wright Export Corporation. Curtiss-Wright was quickly becoming the 'General Motors of the Air' until the great depression in October 1929. Sales dropped and Curtiss-Wright was forced to close certain satellite plants and transfer some of their product lines to the St. Louis facility. It looked like even the Buffalo plants would also have to close when Curtiss-Wright received an order from Colombia, South America for Hawks and Falcons. This was the largest military order to Curtiss since the war. The Colombia sale saved the Curtiss-Wright organization at this low point in its history. This order kept the production lines going until new military and civil markets began to open up as the depression waned and the build-up for World War II began. During the U.S. military build-up prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, all existing Curtiss-Wright plants were expanded and new aircraft factories were built at Columbus, Ohio and Louisville, Kentucky. The dropping of the two atomic bombs on Japan resulted in an unexpected early end to World War II. All of the major U.S. airplane builders including Curtiss-Wright were hit by massive contract cancellations because of the Japanese surrender. In 1946 Curtiss-Wright had only two experimental military models at hand for postwar delivery and no assurance of production orders. Curtiss-Wright was forced to shut down all airplane plants and transfer all units of the Aeroplane Division to their Columbus Plant. The eventual sale of the Airplane Division to North American included design rights to the former Curtiss-Wright airplanes. The Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division, which manufactured airframes, finally closed down in 1951.

Subseries V: Patent Litigation

The Curtiss-Wright Corporation was involved in numerous legal disputes with other major aircraft companies over patent rights. The processing Archivist used the following definition of a patent as a guide for processing the material: a patent is an exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor to manufacture, use, or sell an invention for a certain number of years. This material was arranged alphabetically by manufacturer and by date. For more information on patents in this collection, the researcher may want to review the following subseries: Subseries II, Patents, Subseries III, Patent Serial Numbers and Subseries IV, Patent Application/Dockets.

Subseries VIII: Keystone Aircraft Corporation

The original Keystone Aircraft Corporation was founded in 1920, in Ogdensburg, New York, as Huff-Daland Airplanes Incorporated, with a contract for Army Training Planes. In the fall of 1925, Huff-Daland moved operations to a new plant in Bristol, Pennsylvania, in order to have larger facilities, a better labor market, and a more central location between Trenton and Philadelphia on the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad. On March 8, 1927, the name of the Company was changed to Keystone Aircraft Corporation. Keystone supplied airplanes to the U.S. Government and civil operators in a number of countries. The name of Huff Daland was retained for company's cotton dusting subsidiary, which was created in 1921 in Monroe, Louisiana, and then liquidated in 1928. In October 1928, Keystone announced its purchase of Loening Aeronautical Engineering Corporation of New York and production of Loening aircraft moved to the Bristol plant. Secondary sources indicate that Keystone was acquired by Wright Aeronautical Corporation in 1928 but no report of this occurs in Keystone's Annual Report for the period ending December 31, 1928. It is known, however, that in 1929 Keystone became a manufacturing division of Curtiss-Wright following the merger that created this company. Due in part to the slump in the private aircraft market and a decrease in the government contracts for military aircraft, the Bristol plant closed in 1932 and the Keystone division of Curtiss-Wright ceased to exist.

The Keystone Aircraft Corporation subseries consists of approximately 0.4 cubic feet of photographic material relating to the Bristol plant and aircraft manufactured by Keystone and approximately 0.7 cubic feet of documentary material which includes company records, aircraft specifications, product information, reports, correspondence, and drawings. This subseries has, therefore, been divided into the following two sub-subseries:

  1. I. Photographic sub-subseries
  2. II. Documentary sub-subseries

Materials in both sub-subseries span the years 1927 to 1932.

Original order, when identified, has been maintained. The "Listing of Archival Materials" created during the 1969 appraisal commissioned by Curtiss-Wright Corporation prior to donating these records to the National Air and Space Museum Archives, was used in reconstructing a few missing file titles.

Most of the photographic files were originally filed behind dividers, which are indicated in the finding aid in bold capitalized headings. Prior to processing, many of these photographs were removed to be included on videodisc 7A, then housed within the National Air and Space Museum Videodisc Collection. The removal sheets left in the original folders did not itemize which photographs were removed or how many. Using notations made in the videodisc collection and Keystone's own photograph identification numbers, as recorded on the original file folders and the photographs themselves, it was possible to find the location of most of the Keystone Aircraft Corporation photographs. With the exception of four folders, the videodisc locations for the Keystone photographs are included in the finding aid. The photographs remain in the National Air and Space Museum Videodisc Collection for ease of access.

Series II: Technical Reports

This series contains technical reports from three resources used by Curtiss-Wright in design and development of their aircraft. This material was generated by both Curtiss-Wright and the U.S. Military.

Subseries I: Air Corps Materiel Division, Reports [ACMR]

The Air Corps Materiel Division, Reports [ACMR] were collected by the Curtiss-Wright's St. Louis and Buffalo technical reference libraries. They were originally generated by Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio. They consist of various tests performed on different Curtiss aircraft models, most of which were still in the experimental stage. Arrangement is by the serial and/or report number and then arranged chronologically, e.g. ENG-M-57-525-109 - Engineering and EXP-M-51/P731-20 - Experimental. This subseries consists of paper documents and some photographs filed with the reports.
