GRUMMAN TBF AVENGER

THE 'AVENGER'- THE WORLD'S DEADLIEST TORPEDO PLANE : An unusual photograph of the brand-new U.S. Navy Grumman TBF torpedo plane, which has been termed the 'Avenger'. Planes of this type played a leading part in the battle off Midway in which 2 Japanese aircraft carriers and other enemy vessels were sunk or damaged. Carrying a full - sized torpedo inside of the fuselage ( thus decreasing wind resistance) or 2,000 1lbs of bombs, the Avenger can do better than 270 mph, considerably faster than any other plane of its type. It has a cruising range of 1,400 miles and a ceiling of 20,000ft. It is powered by a huge Wright air-cooled engine and is extremely maneuverable. Defensively, it is well armed with machine guns of heavy calibre.
