Martian Shorelines

Standing bodies of water can generate shorelines around large lakes on Earth, which remain visible even when the water level has changed (for example, the prominent shorelines surrounding glacial Lake Bonneville in Utah). Some features on Mars have been interpreted to be shorelines around former lakes or oceans. We are examining the proposed Martian shoreline features using recent imaging data, and also studying shorelines around former lakes in Oregon and Nevada in order to determine what characteristics of shorelines can best be determined from remote sensing data.
