Traverse Aeolian Ridges on Mars

Transverse Aeolian Ridges (TARs) are wind-produced landforms on Mars that may be either large ripples or small sand dunes. The mechanisms of formation are very different for ripples and dunes, so it is an important science question to determine whether the Martian features are ripples or dunes. Studies of ripples and dunes on Earth, when combined with analysis of recent high resolution images of Martian TARs, are showing that some TARs are most likely granule-coated ripples while others are most similar to reversing sand dunes.
