Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on Earth. An eruption on the southern rift zone of the volcano resulted in a series of lava flows, some of which reached the ocean shoreline. A combination of field and remote sensing studies has provided new insights into the emplacement processes for these recent lava flows.
