Uncolored stipple engraving of a portrait of Tiberius Cavallo (March 30 1749 - December 21 1809). Tiberius Cavallo (also Tiberio) came to London from Naples in 1779, was admitted to Royal Society in 1781, and wrote on electricity magnetism and pneumatic chemistry. He was the author of an early history of ballooning in English, "The History and Practice of Aerostation" (1785), and speculated as to the use of hydrogen to achieve buoyant flight before the Montgolfiers or Charles.
