This survival blanket is an example of equipment contained in rucksack #1, a survival pack carried on all Apollo missions. The rucksacks consisted of tools and gear to help sustain the crew for up to 48 hours while awaiting rescue. The rucksack #1 typically contained a survival radio, survival light assembly, sea-water desalting kits, a machete, three pair of sunglasses, water cans, sunscreen, a pocket knife, utility netting, a fluorel foam pad, and survival blankets. The blanket has two layers, one of a nylon fabric and the other of an insulating Mylar to keep the astronauts warm.

NASA transferred this survival blanket to the Smithsonian Institution in 1979.
