Approximate: 68.6 × 259.1cm (27 × 102 in.)

Physical Description

  • Blue and white tissue paper balloon. Handwritten in ink on the balloon: "Ballon prepare par l'administration des postes pour le transport des lettres en 1870-71 pour le cas de siege d'une ville fortifieé."
  • Documentation that came with the balloon states that it was used to send messages during the siege of Paris in the Franco Prussian War, 1870-1871. However, the balloon lacks signs of use (scorching, dirt, etc.) and this type of balloon does not achieve the altitudes that would have been necessary for delivering messages out of Paris.
