This is one of several bottles of solutions used in protein crystal growth experiments on the Space Shuttle. Its handwritten label indicates that it held the enzyme Lysozyme in a buffer solution that remains stable when another chemical is added. Protein crystal growth experiments involved mixing proteins in different solutions to learn which combinations and conditions produced the best crystals for analysis. A group of researchers actively involved in these experiments for Shuttle flights gave a large set of protein crystal growth equipment, including this item, to the Museum.
