Portrait of Captain Walter Sumpter Smith (1897-1943) in uniform, leaning on a Curtiss JN-4D Jenny. The aircraft is marked "Birmingham Escadrille - 114 Sqn. Obs. - Alabama National Guard". The Birmingham Escadrille was the nickname of the Birmingham Flying Club. In 1922 it became part of the Alabama National Guard as the 135th Observation Squadron. The unit designation was changed to the 114th Observation Squadron, Alabama National Guard, on January 1, 1923.
