Collection Item Summary:

Two subarray modules providing a matrix frame for infrared detectors typical of those used in the focal plane assembly of the IRAS satellite. Used as a dynamic test housing, this assembly was part of the development process to evaluate the durability of the flight modules. The focal plane assembly of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite included 62 infrared channels that were divided into modules, each of which contained seven to eight detectors (See Catalogue# 19950095000). Rockwell International built the focal plane assembly, and transferred it to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1981 at which time its was integrated into IRAS. This subarray module and test mount was transferred to NASM by JPL in 1998. It is now on display in the Explore the Universe gallery.
