Ruth Elder, holding flowers, poses standing on ship's ladder aboard the SS Lima, October 25, 1927. Elder, with pilot George Haldeman, had ditched in the North Atlantic at the end of their 1927 transatlantic flight attempt; they were rescued by a Dutch freighter which delivered them to Horta, Azores, then later departed Horta aboard the SS Lima.
