c. 1848

Physical Description

Uncolored etching of a satirical cartoon showing royals being carried away in balloons and on a train. Louis Phillipe (1773-1850) was king of France and head of the conservative Orleanist party form 1830 to 1848, when he was deposed. As in this print, the balloon was a favorite comic device to indicate the sudden departure of a leader. The newsprint on the reverse shows the etching was cut from a newspaper. The etching has been adhered by the corners to a cardboard backing.
