Thaddeus S. C. Lowe, seen in the balloon's basket, makes an ascension in the gas balloon "Intrepid" to observe the Battle of Fair Oaks during the Penisular Campaign of the American Civil War; probably at his balloon camp at the Gaines House near Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862. Union troops are seen on the ground holding tether lines. [Copied from an unknown print created from a photograph (see NAM A-43655-C) combined with an illustration (the balloon visible above the center fold).]
