The Legion of Merit Medal is awarded to those members of the United States Armed Forces who show exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault was one of the first reciepients of this award, and was given it for his leadership of the Flying Tigers and the Fourteenth Air Force in the Second World War.
